The UVA Concerto Competition was established in 2023 by the Music Department to recognize the outstanding achievements of our students. Student interest in the inaugural competition was high, and the level of performance was even higher.
Pianist Alex Suh won the 2023 competition representing the department at the first student concerto performance at the March 2024 Charlottesville Symphony Concerts. He performed as the piano soloist for Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, one of the virtuosic showcase concertos in all symphonic literature. Alex received standing ovations after both performances. Suh, a third-year at the time of his performance, is double majoring in music with a concentration in performance and computer science. Alex studies with UVA Music faculty, John Mayhood who serves as the Charlottesville Symphony Principal Keyboardist.
