The Department of Music depends upon a talented and dedicated student staff to help run the department efficiently. Below is a list of positions open to all full time UVA students.

Paid Student Positions
Advertising Position (No positions currently available)
The Advertising Intern will gain valuable hands-on experience in design and marketing and will have the opportunity to build a diverse set of creative and strategic skills. Advertising Interns will schedule ads, place ad requests, work with ensemble directors to establish ad budgets, design, and print ads. The intern will maintain archives and budget records of all ads and advertising expenses. The Advertising Intern will work with the Director of Promotions, ensemble directors, and media ad representatives. Knowledge of photoshop, Illustrator, Word, and Excel on Macs is helpful but not required. Reports to the Director of Promotions, Marcy Day. Contact: mday@virginia.edu
Desk Supervisor (currently filled)
Desk Supervisors are responsible for managing Old Cabell Hall and the main office front desk on nights, weekends, and other times as assigned. Duties include, but are not limited to: managing the front office, overseeing practice spaces and making sure rules are followed, answering phones and taking messages for faculty and staff, providing administrative tasks as assigned by Music Department staff, and closing the Music Department Office and Old Cabell Hall after the last shift. Weekend Shifts Required.
Reports to the Administrative Assistant.
Graphic Designer (currently filled)

The Graphic Designer position with the University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music is a paid student position responsible for designing posters, postcards, flyers, and calendars, and providing support to the Director of Promotions. The Graphic Designer should be skilled in graphic design and page layout and have the ability to work creatively in a deadline-driven environment. Experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop is a plus. First and second years are preferred. Hours are flexible but are generally around 10-12 hours per week. House Manager (currently filled)
The Music Department House Managers are responsible for managing all of the non-performance aspects of all events held in the Old Cabell Hall Auditorium and a small number of Music Department events held in other venues.
The House Manager’s job is to make sure that the event runs smoothly, all parts of the building function properly, all patrons’ needs are met (if possible), the Music Department presents a professional appearance to the world, and all rules and laws are followed. The safety of the audience, the building, the University of Virginia, and the reputation of the McIntire Department of Music are your top priorities.
In the absence of Music Department staff, House Managers manage the Ushers, Recording Techs, and Desk Supervisors. They supervise all contractors, monitor who is in secure spaces, act as liaison with the Arts Box Office, the fire department, ambulance, police, ground security, housekeeping, and UVA Facilities. House Managers must present a professional image, solve problems calmly, and be able to speak with authority on behalf of the Music Department. Hours vary with the event schedule and are usually during the evenings and on weekends. Reports to the Director of Music Production, Joel Jacobus.
Unlike during the academic year, a summer House Manager must be available to work during the day for all UVA Summer Orientation events during the month of July.
Music Live (*Now Hiring*)
Music Live interns run and manage our virtual performances, and if possible, some light post-production editing. Work will require some nights, and weekends. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- set up and takedown of recording/streaming equipment.
- being onsite (Old Cabell Hall this year) managing the recording/streaming of an event.
- uploading recordings to UVA Box.
- video editing
- managing Zoom webinars.
Some experience with video editing, AV equipment, Zoom, and social media preferred but not required. We will provide training.

Photographer (currently filled, but volunteers are always welcome)
The photographer takes pictures at rehearsals, concerts and events both at Old Cabell Hall and at other venues around Charlottesville. Other responsibilities include archiving and cataloging photographs, manipulating photographs using photo-editing software, and acting as a representative at Music Department events. The photographer will be exposed numerous genres of music and performance, getting the chance to build a unique photography portfolio. Music or Studio-Art Majors not necessary, but students must be well organized, able to work independently and familiar with digital cameras and photo-editing software. Promotions Assistant (currently filled, but volunteers are always welcome)
Promote department of music events to faculty, students and community members. Contact editors, residential hall advisors, dean of students office, administration, and student leaders. Writing, oral presentation skills a must. Job responsibilities include writing, editing, proof reading, archiving, and designing. Reports to the Director of Promotions, Marcy Day. Recording Tech (Now Hiring)
Recording Techs record concerts given by Music Department ensembles and affiliated groups. The Recording Techs set up the recording equipment, record performances simultaneously to two wave file recorders, mark track timing, and deposit all recording media with the Music Library for archival processing. Techs perform routine checks on equipment and inventory, are required to arrive at least 45 minutes prior to concert time to set-up and check equipment, and to check-in with the house manager and performers. Reports to the Director of Music Production, Joel Jacobus.

Web Designer (No positions currently available)
The Web Designer position with the University of Virginia Music Department is a paid student position responsible for collaborating with music administration & staff as well as the University Communications team to update and maintain all aspects of the department website. The Web Designer should be proficient in HTML, CSS, JS, mobile formatting, and UX/UI design. Experience with Photoshop, Fireworks Javascript, and PHP is a plus. Experience with content management systems such as Wordpress, Drupal, or Joomla preferred. First and second years are preferred. Hours are flexible but are generally around 8 hours per week.
