Jack Engel

The Department of Music presents Jack Engel’s Distinguished Major Percussion Recital on February 24, 2024 at 8 PM in Old Cabell Hall. His recital program will feature four marimba/vibraphone solos, an unorthodox snare drum solo, and a marimba concerto. Jack’s recital theme is extended technique to show the breadth of possibilities associated with percussion instruments. Jack will be accompanied by Karen Dalton (piano).

Jack Engel is a fourth-year student at UVA from Salt Lake City, Utah and Charlottesville, Virginia. He will graduate this May with degrees in Biochemistry and Music. Jack started playing percussion in third grade, starting on the drum set and slowly moving to mallet instruments and battery percussion. Fourteen years later, he has found his love in four-mallet marimba repertoire.

Since coming to UVA in Fall 2020, Jack has been a member of UVA’s Percussion Ensemble and the Charlottesville Symphony. Prior to UVA, Jack was involved in various orchestras, jazz bands, and percussion ensembles in Salt Lake City. He placed in Utah’s Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion state competition multiple years in a row – playing pieces ranging from Pure Imagination from the Willy Wonka series to Gordon Stout’s Astral Dance. Last year, he placed second in the Virginia/D.C. Percussive Arts Society Keyboard Solo Competition with his submission of Michael Burritt’s Four Movements for Marimba. This March, Jack will be joining a group of music professors and students on a trip to Hungary to perform at the University of Pécs.

Upon graduating from UVA, Jack will be working in a research lab at UVA while applying to dual-degree MD/PhD programs across the country, with hopes of fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a physician-scientist.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S.
