A conversation with DJ Kampire
“a scene-leading DJ who can connect the dots between the past, present, and future of African club music.” - Resident Advisor
The music department is pleased to welcome one of East Africa's most exciting DJs for a casual conversation and showcase of the craft of mixing and shaking dance floors. Core member of the world renown Nyege Nyege Collective based in Uganda, Kampire’s vibrant bass-heavy sets have transported her across the world to bring the best of Ugandan party culture to clubs & festivals. Chosen among the best mixes of 2019 by Pitchfork, Kampire stays ahead of the curve and recently featured among the prestigious BBC Radio 1’s essential mixes. For this event, she will be conversing with ethnomusicologist and DJ Noel Lobley and music scholar and producer Basile Koechlin.
One of Mixmag's picks for Top Ten Breakthrough DJs of 2018, Kampire's set on Boiler Room broadcast from Nyege Nyege festival was a legitimate ‘internet moment’, with thousands of shares on Facebook leading to serious FOMO from electronic music fans watching online. Then in the midst of a global pandemic, Kampire’s Nyege Nyege 2020 opening ceremony DJ set stood out from the deluge of home DJ broadcasts, filmed on an island in the Nile for the digital edition of the festival, broadcast by Resident Advisor. In 2021, Kampire’s genre-hopping ‘No Visa’ DJ Mix saw her chosen among May’s best mixes in Pitchfork, and her exhilarating mix for the Black Artist Database celebrated the “breadth of global Blackness” and featured as Resident Advisor’s Mix of the Day. Her monthly NTS radio residency has seen Kampire shine a light on other East African DJs & artists, including Authentically Plastic, NSASI & EchoE. In October 2021 Kampire joined BBC Radio 1’s as one of their esteemed ‘Residency’ host DJs, giving her an even bigger platform for showcasing the best new music from across the diaspora.
