Admissions and Funding

Applying

Applications to graduate programs at UVA may be found on the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences website. GRE scores are no longer required for admission to the Ph.D. program in Music. The University requires international applicants to submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Please also note that the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences waives application fees for all students from Minority Serving Institutions, as well as those affiliated with certain organizations like AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and the like. The list of eligible institutions and organizations is viewable at https://graddiversity.virginia.edu/application-fee-waiver. If you feel that you belong to an underrepresented group that does not appear on this list, and would like to know whether you qualify for a fee waiver, please contact the Director of Graduate Studies.

Supplementary Materials

Applicants to the program in Critical and Comparative Studies must submit two samples of their scholarly writing electronically (part of the GSAS application).

Applicants to the program in Composition and Computer Technology must submit a portfolio of representative work (part of the GSAS application). 

  • Portfolio should include a minimum of three and a maximum of five works.
  • Provide a link to your digital portfolio in a document attached to your GSAS application.
  • If you do not have a digital version of your porfolio, you may mail hard copies to:

Funding & Fellowships

The department offers multiple-year packages of financial aid consisting of fellowships, teaching assistantships, tuition waivers and health insurance coverage.

Our students have received funding through numerous fellowships and grants, including the following:

  • Environmental Resilience & Sustainability Fellowship
  • Praxis Fellowship
  • Presidential Fellowships in Data Science
  • Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in Critical Bibliography

There is a list of fellowship programs available to graduate students at the University of Virginia Scholarships and Fellowships Database. These are awarded on a merit basis to students in all Ph.D.-granting departments at the University. Nominations are made to the Dean of the Graduate School.
