It’s been almost 2 decades since the treble and bass choirs at UVA have shared a concert, so come hear the beautiful and unique qualities of each ensemble! The Virginia Women’s Chorus under the direction of Katherine “KaeRenae” Mitchell and the Virginia Men’s Glee Club under the direction of Frank Albinder will each take the stage for one half of the concert before combining voices in the final two selections of the Spring Concert “Shining Through Grounds”.
The combined choral pieces will be the gorgeous Ave Maria by Franz Biebl (heard at the annual Glee Club Holiday Concerts) and the popular Supermarket Flowers by Ed Sheeran, arranged for sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses by the director of the Stellenbosch University Choir, André van der Merwe. This choir has achieved international acclaim and is the oldest choir in South Africa.
The Chorus and Glee Club are unique in that they are student-run organizations which hire professional conductors. This is the 28th year under the direction of Katherine “KaeRenae” Mitchell. Virginia Women’s Chorus is comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from numerous degree programs and provides a nurturing, fun community for students and community members.
The Chorus will be accompanied by a string quartet, percussion, and piano and will feature a hot-off-the-press composition by Dan Forrest of the Gregorian theme Ubi Caritas. Other selections include a rousing rendition of My God is a Rock and Truth.
The Virginia Glee Club will sing a variety of selections from their recent spring break Tour of the South, including Shine on Me, Auld Lang Syne, a chorus from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and some lesser-known songs of the University.
