MUEN 3620. All rehearsals are held on Mondays, 6:45–9:00 pm in the Hunter Smith Band Building

The University of Virginia Wind Ensemble is open to all students at UVA by audition, and is conducted by the Director of Bands, Dr. Elliott Tackitt. This two-unit, 45-member ensemble features the most outstanding brass, woodwind, and percussion players at the University, and rehearses in the Fall and Spring Semesters.

The focus of this ensemble is for students to explore their artistic potential in a collaborative environment. Wind Ensemble members enjoy the opportunity to practice and perform more challenging chamber music and wind band works encompassing a variety of composers, styles, and musical time periods. Past programmed works have included Kathryn Salfelder’s Cathedrals, Terry Riley’s In C, Gustav Holst’s Second Suite in F, John Philip Sousa’s Waltzes from El Capitan, Jules Massenet’s Meditation, Michael Markowski’s Desert Sage, and Alex Shapiro’s Immersion.

The Wind Ensemble has a history of including performing artists from UVA’s Department of Music as soloists as well as guests from abroad. Musically-inclined students from every College and School are encouraged to participate in auditions, which are held the first week of the semester. Students interested in auditioning are encouraged to visit the Audition Information webpage. Questions can be directed to bands@virginia.edu.
